UNE CHAMBRE └ LA MER

BEAUFORT-LOCATION: BEACH NEAR DE WESTDIJK, WENDUINE

Mathilde Rosier

°1973, France

On the beach of Wenduine the artist built a wooden cabin with a floor plan in the shape of a snail shell: Une chambre à la mer (A room at the sea). In the middle there is a tiny space with a bed; pictures of fish from the North Sea are hanging on the wall. The architecture of the cabin is based on that of the traditional beach huts. The idea behind this construction is the contrast between the intimacy of the inner space and the vastness of the surrounding coastal landscape. The room itself evokes dream and rest: as one falls asleep one dives into the sea; the pictures of fish suggest the biggest animal life deep under water, invisible at the surface.
