NO MORE BORING ART

BEAUFORT-LOCATION: AIRSPACE ABOVE THE CASINO, MIDDELKERKE

John Baldessari

°1932, USA

During Beaufort03 a sports plane flew over the coast fifteen times for fifteen minutes with a banner saying: No More Boring Art. The sentence refers to an event in 1971. Baldessari had been asked by the Canadian Novia Scotia College of Art and Design to make an original work. He was not able to make the journey, but he assigned his students to write the line ‘I will not make any more boring art’ on all of the walls. At the same time he created his own version and recorded it on video: over and over he conscientiously wrote the same testament in a notebook. This exercise ostentatiously conflicts with the message of the lesson, to distance oneself from the creation of boring art.
