LABYRINTH AND PLEASURE GARDEN #23

BEAUFORT-LOCATION: IJZERPARK, KNOKKE-HEIST

Jan Vercruysse

°1948, Belgium

For about ten years Jan Vercruysse has been designing gardens. One of the garden designs Labyrinth and Pleasure Garden #23 was realised in the Ijzerpark in Knokke-Heist. Vercruysse considers his gardens as works of art. Playing and interacting with space are important aspects. This labyrinth, bordered with 750 high taxus plants, makes the notion ‘a place of silence’ tangible. Striking are the long slanting water mass and the pools of blue stone with water, flowing from simple taps, whereby the water jet literally converges with a light beam coming out of the water. The structure reminds the spectator of the historic Italian gardens from the 16th century, where a man slowly loses himself.
