BEAUFORT LOCATION: STELLA MARIS CHAPEL, ZEEBRUGGE

Monika Baer

°1964, Freiburg, Germany

Since the beginning of the 1990s Monika Baer has been making paintings, which are a mysterious hotchpotch of abstract colour fields and ‘long gone’ styles and motives from the history of art. Rococo, baroque and romanticism, but also surrealism and symbolism are cheerfully mixed and sampled into hybrid paintings. Their meaning cannot be unravelled at first glance. To Baer, painting is a suggestion of atmospheres, memories, space, but at the same time it is also matter, the physical strength of materials, traces. In the sober interior of the neo-Romanesque Stella Maris chapel you could admire four of her works.
