BEAUFORT LOCATION: PIER OF BLANKENBERGE

Stephan Balkenhol

°1957, Fritzlar, Germany

A vessel appeared to have been washed ashore by the pier of Blankenberge during a tidal wave. The vessel is built of wide, long boards. Two reliefs decorate the sides with an anonymous male and female figure lying down. Schiff (Ship) is a work by sculptor Stephan Balkenhol who is particularly renowned for his wooden sculptures. For Beaufort02 Balkenhol, inspired by the sea and the life of fishermen, was in search for an existing vessel. By adding images of the stern as well as reliefs the artist completes the story of the vessel, hovering between riddle and recognisability.
