'CIRCUS' AND OTHER WORKS

BEAUFORT LOCATION: SAINT-MONICA CHURCH, DE HAAN

Koen Van den Broek

°1973, Tongeren, Belgium

Koen Van den Broek paints landscapes with traces of a human presence such as a circus tent, a motorway, a bridge or a couple of houses. The composition of his works depends on deep perspectives and the colours are barely representative. In the Saint-Monica church Koen Van den Broek created doubt in the spectators’ minds. With enlarged details and clear compositions he makes us forget the landscape so that only the mere painting is left. Apart from a beautiful painting, this game of zooming in and out towards that representative image also results in an interesting story about the ambiguous entity of painting as a medium after the omnipresence of photography.
