Luk Van Soom

°1956, Turnhout, Belgium

Luk Van Soom is a Belgian sculptor. He developed an imaginative, figurative language of image: with his typical frivolous touch he designs bizarre outfits for deep-sea divers, mountain climbers, balloonists, in short travellers with a mission. For Beaufort02 a metal tree of 12 metres high was placed in the sand of the dunes. Streetlamps covered with gold leaf were mounted at the end of the branches. Some branches have a curling motive, which is typical of Van Soom. At dusk the tree became fluorescent and an array of colours could be seen, which was truly surreal. The tree is called Noli me tangere or ‘Do not touch me’, because after all you cannot touch the light.
