MAMAN

BEAUFORT LOCATION: TOMB OF JAMES ENSOR, DUINENKERKJE GRAVEYARD, MARIAKERKE (OSTEND)

Louise Bourgeois

°1911, Paris, France

Bourgeois’ works of art are often about her dominant father, her parents’ carpet workshop and her ill mother who died early. Her life and experiences as a mother and as a woman play an important role in her work which therefore may be linked with art inspired by feminism. MAMAN (Mother, 1999), a pregnant spider, is a typical work by Bourgeois. Spiders have a positive connotation for her. They proceed uniformly when weaving their web, which is a productive, healing undertaking. For Bourgeois, the spider is a tribute to her mother who, sitting by the loom, corrected errors in the carpet workshop. Bourgeois, who admired James Ensor (1860-1949), had her MAMAN watch over his grave.
