Tom Claassen

°1964, Heerlen, the Netherlands

As a sculptor Tom Claassen is fascinated by forms. His sculptures are solid, robust and stubby and usually represent a far-reaching abstraction of animals, humans or objects. Claassen draws our attention to the ambiguous nature of every sculpture: all animal-like things  become anthropomorphic, all monumental things become dreary and everyday things become remarkable. Liggende man (Lying man), a sculpture of 10 metres long, represents a gigantic man with loose limbs. The dented figure that has fallen apart looks like a melted snowman. The apparently ephemeral nature of this work stands out particularly well when children climb the disconsolate giant.
