HARBINGER WITH BARGE AND IMPERIAL LANDSCAPE (NORTH SEA)

BEAUFORT LOCATION: BEACH OF SINT-ANDRÉ, OOSTDUINKERKE

Jane Alexander

°1959, Johannesburg, South Africa

Tormented human figures and hybrid creatures are an unmistakable part of Alexander’s universe. Her work is rooted in the trauma of the apartheid regime but it also deals with other universal themes such as suffering, ethnicity and racism. Out of the 38 metres long inland barge a strange figure with long horns and rubber boots walks towards the sea. He is the harbinger. Harbinger with barge and imperial landscape also shows an installation with machetes, sickles and 500 pairs of gloves referring, among other things, to the violent South African history.
